Brighton’s rising tennis star, Sonay Kartal, delivered one of the most exciting moments on day one of Wimbledon by defeating the 20th seed, Jelena Ostapenko, in a thrilling three-set match.
Playing under the sun on Court Three, Kartal showed confidence, strength, and determination to secure a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 victory over her higher-ranked opponent. This win marks the biggest Grand Slam achievement of her career so far and one of her best wins by ranking.
Just last week in Eastbourne, Ostapenko had beaten Kartal in straight sets. But this time, the British number three came back stronger, turning the tables and showing how far she’s come.
The match didn’t start smoothly for Kartal. She quickly fell behind 0-3 in the first set and struggled to keep up with Ostapenko’s powerful shots. However, she refused to give up. At 4-5, Kartal saved three set points and then went on to win five games in a row, stealing the first set from the experienced Latvian player.
Ostapenko fought back in the second set and managed to even the match. But Kartal stayed calm and focused, breaking serve early in the final set and taking control. She raced ahead to a 5-0 lead, and even though Ostapenko managed to win two games, Kartal finished the match confidently on her second opportunity.
Now, Kartal moves on to the second round, where she will face Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria. Tomova advanced after Ons Jabeur retired from their opening match.
At just 23 years old, Sonay Kartal continues to impress fans and prove her place on one of tennis’s biggest stages. Her journey at Wimbledon is far from over — and all eyes will be on her next match.
