Farewell to Julian McMahon: Celebrated Actor Dies at 56 After Private Cancer Battle

From Australian soap operas to Hollywood stardom, the actor — and son of a former Prime Minister — leaves behind a legacy of talent, charm, and resilience.

Julian McMahon, the acclaimed Australian actor known for his iconic roles in Charmed, Nip/Tuck, and Profiler, has died at the age of 56. His passing was confirmed by his wife, Kelly, in a heartfelt statement revealing that McMahon had been privately battling cancer.

“Julian loved life. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved his work, and he loved his fans,” Kelly wrote. “His deepest wish was to bring joy into as many lives as possible.”

McMahon passed away peacefully in Clearwater, Florida, on Thursday. Despite his illness, he continued working until recently, with his last roles including the Netflix series The Residence and the Australian feature film The Surfer, co-starring Nicolas Cage.

Born into prominence as the son of former Australian Prime Minister Sir William McMahon and philanthropist Lady Sonia McMahon, Julian initially stepped into the spotlight through modelling before transitioning into acting. He began his career on the Australian series Home and Away and The Power, The Passion before gaining international fame in the United States.

McMahon’s portrayal of the charismatic and troubled Dr. Christian Troy on Nip/Tuck earned him a Golden Globe nomination and cemented his status as a television icon. Fans praised his ability to play complex, often morally conflicted characters with charisma and depth.

He was also known for his roles in Charmed as Cole Turner, and later in Marvel’s Fantastic Four films as the villainous Doctor Doom.

Julian was married three times, including a brief but high-profile marriage to singer and actress Dannii Minogue. His final years were marked by quiet strength, devotion to his craft, and a strong desire for privacy.

As tributes pour in from fans and colleagues around the world, his family has requested space to grieve. “We wish for all of those to whom Julian brought joy, to continue to find joy in life,” Kelly added.

Julian McMahon’s legacy lives on in the stories he told and the lives he touched.
